Anyway, today I scored my first real freelance web design/development job. It's pretty cool. My client is a local bar I frequent. I was chatting with the owner's husband one night, and he managed to pry my post-education goals from deep within my heart. He found out I'd like to get into the webdesign business, and we got to talking about his website. He talked to his wife, who owns the bar, and she told me she also needed a website.
At that point I realized I had just stumbled upon land that was littered with tiny, tiny, gold deposits. Being a big fan of this bar, I decided to draft up a concept for the website so I could present it to the owner. Here's the very simple concept I showed her husband today:

It's not much to look at, yet. My idea was to provide something very simple, elegant yet playful, and concise. I wanted people to understand what the Basin Martini Bar is, what they do, what they serve, and then want to go for a visit to experience it. So there isn't a whole lot of fluff in the example.
The martini images were pulled from a couple of stock photo websites:
The license for the header image allows me to use it for this type of website, and the other one will be replaced or removed before the website goes live.
I also found out that the bar provides catering services, which I will add a page for. This is good, because I don't like having all that space around the menu links.
This being my first "job" doing real design, I'm not sure what I'll charge. But since it is my first job, I'll probably exchange emails looking for what exactly the owner wants, then provide some sort of quote based on some reasonable hourly rate. Then, I'll begin producing the website, logging the hours I work on it, then come up with a reasonable flat-fee to present to them when the website is launch-worthy.
This sounds good to me, and hopefully it sounds good to my client.
Anyway, I'm going to keep this blog running with stuff pertaining to my work on various websites.... and possibly other stuff.
